- Needs high humidity
Sow: Mar to May
Harvest: Aug to Sep
Sowing Indoors
Sow two seeds on edge, 1.5 cm deep, per 8 cm pot. Water well with a fine rose. Place in a propagator at 20 °C or cover the tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. Keep moist.
Growing On
When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a warm, light position, shaded from direct sunlight. If both seeds germinate, discard the weaker seedling.
Planting Out
Melons grow best in a greenhouse or polytunnel, but can also be grown in a warm, sunny, sheltered spot outside. Minimum temperature: 12 °C. When plants have 3–4 leaves, transplant into greenhouse borders 75 cm apart, grow bags (2 plants), or 45 cm diameter containers (1 plant). Avoid sudden drops in temperature.
Support
Little Darling is a trailing variety. Allow to spread on the ground to protect fruits, or provide supports for climbing.
Advice
Water and feed well with tomato fertiliser to promote fruiting. Male flowers (without a swelling behind them) are necessary for pollination—do not remove. Maintain high humidity but ensure greenhouses are well-ventilated in hot weather. Produces up to four delicious fruits per plant.
