Sow: Feb to Aug
Flowering: Feb to Aug
Sowing
Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface, and lightly cover with a little more compost. Place in a warm spot, 15–20°C, and keep moist. Higher temperatures may inhibit germination.
Growing On
Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant 5cm apart into trays of potting compost.
Planting Out
Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2–3 weeks before planting out. Allow 15cm between plants.
Advice
Seeds can also be sown outdoors when the soil is warm. Sow thinly and lightly cover with a little soil. Keep soil moist until seedlings emerge. Thin to 15–20cm apart and transfer thinnings to other parts of your garden. Although a perennial, Violas are more often grown as annuals. Flowering time depends on when seeds are sown.
