Sow Indoors: Mar to May
Harvest: Sep to Oct
Sowing Indoors
Sow seeds individually on edge in small pots of firm, moist seed compost 2 cm deep. Cover with cling film and keep in warmth at 15–18 °C. As seedlings develop, remove cling film and grow under cool, light conditions, avoiding direct sunlight. Keep moist.
Planting Out
Gradually acclimatise seedlings to outdoor conditions for 2–3 weeks before planting out, allowing 90 cm between plants, after risk of frost has passed. Water and feed regularly.
Sowing Outdoors
Water sowing positions, then sow 2–3 seeds close together in a group 2 cm deep, spacing groups 90 cm apart. After germination, leave only the strongest seedling per group. Keep well watered in dry spells.
Aftercare
Pumpkins require frequent watering, especially in dry spells. Feed regularly with liquid fertiliser once fruits start swelling. Grow and ripen in full sun.
Advice
Start indoors early and protect from cold for largest fruits. Only keep 1–2 developing pumpkins per plant to focus energy on fruit growth.
