Sow: Feb to Apr
Harvest: Jul to Sep
Sowing Indoors
Level fill a module seed tray with seed compost, firming with the base of another tray. Water well with a fine rose. Sow seeds 1 cm deep, about 5 per module. Place in a propagator or cover tray with cling film and leave at 10–15 °C. Keep moist. Allow about 2 weeks to germinate.
Growing On
When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. Grow on in a minimum temperature of 10 °C. Thin if needed to 3 or 4 per module.
Planting Out
Gradually accustom young plants to outdoor conditions for 2–3 weeks before planting out (as clumps) in their cropping positions, leaving 15 cm between clumps and 30 cm between rows. Water and feed regularly. Plant closer for more, smaller shallots.
Aftercare
Water regularly until the bulbs have swollen, stopping from mid-summer. Keep weeds at bay. Remove flower stems as soon as they appear.
Advice
Can also be sown direct, once the soil is starting to warm up. Harvest bulbs once the foliage is floppy and yellowing, before it dies down fully. Lift the bulbs carefully and separate them. After drying, they can be stored in a cool, dry place.
