Sow: Jan to Apr
Harvest: Aug to Sep
Sowing Indoors
Almost fill a seed tray or modules with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly and cover with a little more compost. Place in warmth (15–20 °C).
Growing On
Keep seedlings in a light position, but out of direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant 5 cm apart into trays of potting compost.
Transplanting
Gradually accustom plants to outside containers for 2–3 weeks before planting out to their cropping positions. Allow 15 cm between plants and 30 cm between rows. For really big onions, allow 30 cm between plants and 45 cm between rows.
Sowing Outdoors
Sow seeds thinly in a pre-watered shallow row, lightly covering with a little soil. Keep moist in dry spells.
Thinning
Thin seedlings to 15 cm apart to allow full development of the bulbs.
Advice
Lift onions and spread out to dry on a clean surface in a well-ventilated garage or shed before storing for winter use.
