Sow: February to May
Flowering: June to October
Sowing
Level fill a module tray with seed compost, firming with the base of another tray. Water well with a fine rose. Sow seeds individually over the surface, lightly covering with a little more compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator at 20 °C, or cover the tray with cling film and leave in a warm room.
Growing On
When shoots appear, remove cling film or ventilate the propagator. Keep seedlings in a light position but shade from direct sunlight. Maintain a minimum temperature of 10 °C.
Hardening Off / Planting Out
Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2–3 weeks before planting out when the risk of frost has passed. Allow 30 cm between plants. Water well until established. Plant in groups of 3s or 5s, supporting each other as they grow.
Sow Outdoors
Rake soil to provide a firm, even surface. Sow seeds thinly 6 mm deep in pre-watered soil. Keep soil moist until seedlings are established. Thin seedlings to ensure correct spacing.
Aftercare
To aid germination, soak seeds overnight in lukewarm water. Cut faded flowering stems regularly, following the stem into the canopy and cutting off at its growing point.
Caution
Toxic to pets; harmful if eaten by humans.
