Sow: March to May, September to October
Flowering: June to August
Sowing
Prepare the ground well and rake to a fine tilth before sowing. Sow 1 cm deep, watering the soil beforehand if it is dry, and continue to water as needed.
Thinning
When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to approximately 20 cm apart.
Aftercare
Keep the soil moist, but do not over-water. Remove spent flowerheads to prolong flowering.
Advice
For autumn sowings, use cloche or fleece protection when hard frosts threaten. These plants generally bloom earlier the following summer than spring-sown plants. For cutting, take flower spikes that have only partially opened.
