Unwins Butterhead Lettuce Marvel of Four Seasons Seeds produce lettuce with attractive red and green leaves.
This French heirloom variety dates back to the late nineteenth century and boasts rich colours. Interestingly, the leaves get darker as it gets cooler. While using it in salads will certainly make for an eye catching display.
Marvel of Four Seasons also gives you an excellent flavour and the ability to harvest over a long period.

Sowing
Sow thinly 1 cm deep in trays or modules of firm, pre-watered compost and cover lightly if desired. Place in a warm spot at 10–15 °C and keep moist at all times.
Growing On / Planting Out
After the risk of frost has passed, plant seedlings into the harvest position 25 cm apart, with 30 cm between rows, when plants have 3–4 true leaves. Alternatively, sow thinly 1 cm deep directly in the harvest location. Keep soil moist and thin to 25 cm apart.
Advice
Keep well watered. Small sowings every 3 weeks will ensure a continuous supply. Use netting to protect from birds and insects. This heirloom French variety has attractive red and green leaves, rich colours that deepen in cooler weather, excellent flavour, and can be harvested over a long period. It can also be sown in autumn and overwintered with protection.
