- Loved by pollinators
Sow: February to July
Flowering: May to July
Sowing
Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover with a little more compost. Place in a warm position, 10–15 °C, and keep moist.
Growing On
Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant 5 cm apart into trays of potting compost or individually into 8 cm pots.
Hardening Off/Planting Out
Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2–3 weeks before planting out once the danger of frost has passed. Allow 45 cm between plants.
Advice
Delphiniums prefer a sunny, sheltered spot in fertile, well-drained soil. Water and feed well in spring and early summer. Staking is recommended to support tall flower spikes. Remove spent spikes to encourage a second flowering later in the season. Earlier sowings will flower the same year; later sowings the following year.
Caution
Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten.
