Unwins Delphinium King Scarlet (English Rose) are a strong-stemmed variety with extra-large double flowers in a true English Rose colour. Perfect for cutting and for use in sunny, sheltered borders or containers.
Sow: April to May / August to October
Flowering: June to August
Sowing
Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover with a little more compost. Place in a warm position, 10–15 °C, and keep moist.
Growing On
Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant 5 cm apart into trays of potting compost or individually into 8 cm pots.
Hardening Off/Planting Out
Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2–3 weeks before planting out once the danger of frost has passed. Allow 45 cm between plants.
Advice
Delphiniums (and similar tall-stemmed plants) like a sunny, sheltered spot in fertile, well-drained soil. Water and feed well in spring and early summer. Staking is recommended to support strong stems. Remove spent flower spikes to encourage a second flowering later in the season. Earlier sowings will flower the same year; later sowings the following year.
