- Mini cucumbers (8cm)
Sow: Feb to May
Harvest: Jun to Sep
Sowing Indoors
Level fill a module tray with seed compost, firming with the base of another tray. Water well. Sow seeds individually on edge, pushing 1–2 cm into the compost. Place in warmth (20–25 °C) and cover with cling film. Keep moist.
Growing On
Remove cling film as soon as shoots appear. Keep seedlings in a light position, shaded from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant into 8 cm pots of potting compost. Grow on in a minimum temperature of 12–15 °C.
Greenhouse Planting
Plant 60 cm apart into a greenhouse border, grow bags, or 30 cm+ diameter pots once a minimum temperature of 12 °C can be maintained. Water regularly, especially in hot weather, and use tomato food to promote fruiting. Remove any male flowers (those without a swelling behind them) as soon as they appear. Train up a wire or cane and pinch out growing tips when plants reach the top of their support; pinch out side-shoot tips a couple of leaves past a female flower (or at 60 cm if flowerless).
Outdoor Growing
Seeds can be sown directly outside, or young plants planted out, in a sunny, sheltered spot in late May/early June. Soil should be well manured and fertilised, watering regularly. Protect new sowings with fleece or under cloches. Plants may also be grown in pots on a patio or other warm, sheltered spot from June.
Advice
Check plants frequently and harvest fruits before they become overripe. Regular picking encourages continued fruit production.
