Sow: Feb to Apr
Harvest: Aug to Oct
Sowing Indoors
Level fill a module tray with seed compost, firming gently. Sow seeds individually, covering with about 5 mm of compost. Place in a propagator at 15–20 °C, or cover tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. Keep soil moist.
Growing On
When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a bright position, shaded from direct sunlight. Maintain a minimum temperature of 10 °C. Gradually harden off before planting outdoors.
Planting Out
When seedlings have produced 4 leaves, transplant to cropping positions, leaving 25 cm between plants. Firm in and keep well watered during dry spells.
Advice
Celery needs consistent water to produce crisp, succulent sticks. Enrich the soil with plenty of organic matter and mulch during summer to retain moisture.
