Sow: Feb to Mar
Harvest: Aug to Oct
Sowing Indoors
Level-fill a module tray with seed compost, firming with the base of another tray. Water well with a fine rose. Sow seeds 1 cm deep in compost. Place in a propagator at 18–20 °C or cover the tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. Keep soil moist at all times.
Growing On
When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. Maintain a minimum temperature of 15 °C while growing on.
Planting Out
Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over 2–3 weeks before planting out in the border or in patio containers (3 plants per 30 cm) once the risk of frost has passed. Water and feed well to encourage fruiting.
Aftercare
Best grown in a sunny site. Berries are ripe when orange/red in colour. Do not eat the papery 'lantern' or any other part of the plant. Can also be used as a cut flower.
