- Edible
Sow: February to May / August to September
Flowering: June to September
Sowing
For earlier flowering, sturdier plants, sow in trays of moist seed compost, lightly covering with a little more compost, and keep in gentle warmth at 10–15 °C.
Growing On
Plant 5 cm apart into trays of compost when seedlings are large enough to handle. Gradually acclimatize to cooler conditions before planting out from April onwards, allowing about 30 cm between plants.
Sowing Outdoors
Rake soil to provide a firm, even surface. Sow seeds thinly in pre-watered soil, lightly covering with a little more soil. Keep moist until seedlings appear and water as required in dry spells.
Thinning
When large enough to handle, thin seedlings to allow proper development and prevent overcrowding.
Aftercare / Advice
Calendula petals are edible and make a colourful addition to salads.
