Sow: Feb to Apr
Harvest: Dec to Feb
Sowing Indoors
Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover with a fine layer of compost. Place in warmth at 10–15 °C and keep moist. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant 5 cm apart into trays of potting compost.
Growing On / Planting Out
Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions for 2–3 weeks before planting out in summer. Space 60 cm apart in all directions.
Sowing Outdoors
Prepare a seedbed of finely broken, weed-free soil. Sow seeds thinly in a shallow, pre-watered row, then lightly cover with soil. Keep moist until seedlings are established.
Transplanting
When seedlings have about four true leaves, transplant them to their cropping positions, spacing 60 cm each way. Firm in well and water regularly during dry spells.
Aftercare
Incorporate fertiliser into the soil before planting to promote strong growth. Firm plants well to prevent “wind rock” in winter. Cover with protective netting or fleece to guard against birds and insect pests.
