Harvest in early spring for tender spears. A winter-hardy variety producing colourful, nutritious, and succulent spears.
Sow: Mar to May
Harvest: Mar to Apr
Sowing Indoors
Sow two seeds 1.5 cm deep in each module of a tray filled with firm, pre-watered compost. Keep soil moist at all times. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to one per module.
Planting Out
Plant in the final position 30 cm apart, with 45 cm between rows, when plants have 3–4 true leaves.
Sowing Outdoors
Sow three seeds per station, 1.5 cm deep, directly into the soil bed, spaced 30 cm apart. Keep soil moist and protect from frost. Thin to one strong seedling per station once large enough to handle.
Growing On
Keep soil moist and free of weeds. Harvest regularly once spears begin to form to encourage continued production.
Aftercare
Use netting to protect from cabbage white butterfly and other pests.
