Product Details
Unwins Dwarf Broad Bean The Sutton Seeds are the perfect crop for smaller gardens as they grow low to the ground.
These beans are suited to both autumn and spring sowing, but be prepared for a flourish of heavy crops of well filled pods and beans that are excellent when eaten fresh or you could freeze them.
Sow: February to May, October to November
Harvest: May to July
Sowing
Sow individual seeds 5 cm deep and 15 cm apart in well drained soil. Protect with cloches or fleece in cold weather. Broad beans are often sown in double rows about 25 cm apart. Allow 45 cm between each set of double rows. In raised beds, sow single rows 25 cm apart. This dwarf variety can also be sown in a large container using a multi purpose or loam compost.
Aftercare
Pinch out growing tips when in full flower to deter blackfly. Requires support. Keep well watered, especially in dry spells and at the time of flower setting.
Advice
In cold areas, where the soil is poorly drained, or where there are mice, seeds can be sown 5 cm deep in compost, in pots or module trays. Water well, keep in a light position and plant out from March after acclimatising to outdoor conditions.
Harvest
Pick the beans as young as possible for the best flavour. When very young, they can be cooked and eaten in their pods. Broad beans are delicious cooked, cooled and used in salads too.
